Hygiene and Airflow.
A hygiene visit is a professional clean that removes the plaque and tartar brushing can't reach, keeping your gums healthy and your smile fresh.
Key facts.
Why a professional clean helps
Even with great brushing, plaque builds up in places that are hard to reach. Over time it hardens into tartar, which you can't remove at home. Tartar can lead to bleeding gums and gum disease.
A hygiene visit clears it away, polishes your teeth and leaves your mouth feeling really clean.
What is Airflow?
Airflow uses a fine spray of air, water and powder to lift stains and plaque from your teeth. It's a gentle way to polish away marks from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, and it reaches into tight gaps.
What happens
- We check your gums and look for any areas that need extra care.
- We clean away plaque and tartar, above and just below the gum line.
- We polish your teeth, or use Airflow if you've chosen it.
- We show you simple ways to keep your teeth clean at home.
Keeping your teeth clean
- Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean between your teeth every day with floss or small brushes.
- Spit after brushing, but don't rinse, so the fluoride keeps working.
- Come back for your next clean when we recommend.
What it costs
If your gums need more than a regular clean, such as a deep clean, see our gum care page. “From” prices start at that amount and depend on your treatment. Your dentist will give you a written plan and price before any work starts. See all our prices.
Common questions
How much is a hygiene appointment?
From £45 for regular patients, £59 for new patients, and £89 with Airflow.
Does it hurt?
Most people find it comfortable. If your gums are sore or sensitive, tell us and we'll go gently.
How often should I have a clean?
It depends on your gums. Regular patients often come every 3 months. We'll recommend what suits you.
My gums bleed when I brush. Should I come in?
Yes. Bleeding gums are often an early sign of gum disease, which is easier to treat early. See our gum care page.
