Teeth whitening.
Professional whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth for a brighter smile, done safely by registered dental professionals.
Key facts.
A brighter smile, safely
Whitening uses a gel to lighten the natural colour of your teeth. It's a simple way to brighten teeth that have become stained or yellowed over time.
By law, only registered dental professionals can carry out tooth whitening. The NHS warns that kits bought online and salon treatments can harm your teeth and gums.
How it works
- Your dentist checks your teeth and gums are healthy, and treats any problems first.
- We talk about the shade you'd like and what whitening can do.
- The whitening gel is applied, with your gums protected.
- We give you tips to keep your smile bright.
With home whitening, you wear custom-fitted trays with the gel for about 2 to 6 weeks.
Keeping it bright
- Your teeth may feel sensitive for a little while. This usually settles.
- Cut down on tea, coffee, red wine and smoking to keep the result.
- Keep up your hygiene visits to remove surface stains.
Before you start
Whitening only works on natural teeth, so fillings, crowns and veneers won't change colour. It isn't suitable for anyone aged 17 or under, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. With good care, the NHS says results can last around 3 years.
What it costs
Whitening isn't available on the NHS. Any dental work needed first, such as a filling, is priced separately. “From” prices start at that amount and depend on your treatment. Your dentist will give you a written plan and price before any work starts. See all our prices.
