About

Why you might need it

Inside every tooth is a soft centre called the pulp. If decay or an injury lets bacteria in, the pulp can become infected. This can cause pain, swelling or an abscess.

Root canal treatment removes the infection and saves the tooth. Without it, the tooth may need to come out.

Signs you might need it:

  • Pain when you bite or chew
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • A swollen or tender gum near the tooth
  • A tooth that's getting darker in colour

Your visit

What happens

  1. Your dentist numbs the tooth, so you stay comfortable.
  2. They make a small opening and remove the infected pulp.
  3. They clean and shape the inside of the tooth.
  4. They fill and seal it to keep bacteria out.
  5. Your tooth may then need a crown to protect it.

Treatment usually takes 2 or more visits.

Aftercare

After treatment

  • Your tooth may feel tender for a few days. Simple painkillers can help.
  • Avoid chewing hard food on that tooth until it's fully repaired.
  • Keep brushing and cleaning between your teeth as normal.
  • Call us if the pain or swelling gets worse.

Your options

Keeping your own tooth is usually the best choice for your bite and your smile. The other option is taking the tooth out, which leaves a gap that may need a bridge, denture or implant. We'll talk through both, with prices, so you can decide.

What it costs

Many teeth need a crown afterwards to protect them. This is priced separately, and we'll tell you the cost first. “From” prices start at that amount and depend on your treatment. Your dentist will give you a written plan and price before any work starts. See all our prices.

Questions

Common questions

How much is root canal treatment?

From £500 for a front tooth, £600 for a premolar and £700 for a back tooth (molar). If you need a crown afterwards, that's priced separately.

Does it hurt?

We numb the tooth first, so it should feel much like having a filling. It often eases the pain you came in with.

How many visits will I need?

Usually 2 or more. We'll let you know at your first visit.

Why not just take the tooth out?

Keeping your own tooth is usually best. But it's your choice, and we'll explain both options and their costs.
