Care for the whole family

Children see the same dentists and pay the same prices as adults. They can have most of the treatments we offer adults, where the treatment is right for their age, and only with a parent's or guardian's consent. You can book your child in on their own, or at the same time as your own check-up.

The NHS advises taking your child to the dentist when their first milk teeth come through, or before they turn 1, so they get used to it early. After that, children should be seen at least once a year. Your dentist will tell you how often your child needs to come at each visit.

A first visit

What happens

  1. Book online, or call us on 01205 337 000.
  2. Your dentist has a gentle look at your child's teeth and gums.
  3. We talk you through what we found and how to look after their teeth at home.
  4. If anything needs treatment, we explain the options and the price, and nothing is done without your consent.

For a very young child, the first visit is mostly about getting used to the chair, the light and the dentist, so the next one feels normal.

Getting ready

Helping your child feel at ease

  • Talk about the dentist in a calm, everyday way. Words like "hurt" or "scary" can plant worries.
  • Read a picture book or play "dentist" at home, counting their teeth with a toothbrush.
  • Book a time when your child is usually rested, not hungry or tired.
  • If you feel nervous about the dentist yourself, try not to show it. Children pick up on it.
  • Tell us when you book if your child is anxious or has any extra needs, and we'll take our time.
At home

Looking after their teeth

The NHS advises:

  • Start brushing as soon as the first milk tooth comes through, usually around 6 months.
  • Brush twice a day for about 2 minutes: last thing at night and one other time.
  • Under 3s: a smear of fluoride toothpaste with at least 1,000ppm fluoride. You do the brushing.
  • Ages 3 to 6: a pea-sized amount of toothpaste with 1,000 to 1,500ppm fluoride. Help and watch them brush.
  • Age 7 and over: toothpaste with 1,350 to 1,500ppm fluoride. They can brush on their own, but check they're doing it well.
  • Teach them to spit out the toothpaste after brushing, not to rinse with water.
Sugar

Food, drink and decay

Tooth decay happens when sugary food and drink are had often and teeth aren't cleaned well. It often has no symptoms at first, so check-ups help find it early.

  • Keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes, rather than snacks through the day.
  • Ask for sugar-free medicines where you can.
Accidents

If your child knocks or breaks a tooth

  • Don't push a knocked-out baby tooth back in. It could harm the adult tooth growing underneath. Keep it in milk if you can and call us.
  • If an adult tooth is knocked out, hold it by the white part, not the root, and call us straight away. This is urgent.
  • For a chip or crack, keep any piece in milk and call us.
  • Children under 16 shouldn't take aspirin. Ask a pharmacist about painkillers suitable for your child's age.
