When to call us, and when to call 999

Call us the same day for toothache that won't settle, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, or a swelling in your gum or cheek. If an adult tooth has been knocked out, call straight away: our broken tooth page explains what to do with the tooth on the way. For pain, see toothache, and for swelling, see dental abscess.

Go to A&E or call 999 for a serious injury to your face or jaw, bleeding from your mouth that won't stop, or swelling of your mouth, lips, throat or neck with difficulty breathing. Don't drive yourself. If you're not sure, call NHS 111.
